3RD Shift Rubber Manufacturing Laboratory Technician
Position Summary
The Rubber Manufacturing Laboratory Technician supports the development, testing, and quality control of rubber compounds and finished products. This role is responsible for preparing rubber formulations, conducting physical and chemical tests, maintaining laboratory equipment, and documenting results to ensure products meet internal and customer specifications.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing & Analysis
- Perform routine and non-routine testing on raw materials, rubber compounds, and finished products
- Conduct tests such as:
- Mooney viscosity
- Rheometer/ODR/MDR testing
- Tensile, elongation, and hardness (Shore A/D)
- Specific gravity
- Compression set and abrasion resistance
- Record, analyze, and report test results accurately and timely
Compounding & Sample Preparation
- Prepare rubber compounds according to formulations using laboratory mixers and mills
- Weigh and handle raw materials following established procedures
- Mold, cure, and prepare test specimens
Quality Control Support
- Assist with incoming material inspection and lot qualification
- Investigate nonconforming materials and support corrective actions
- Ensure testing complies with ASTM, ISO, and customer specifications
Equipment & Lab Maintenance
- Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory testing equipment
- Keep laboratory clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards
- Maintain chemical inventories and proper storage of materials
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate lab notebooks, test logs, and electronic records
- Assist in preparing technical reports and data summaries
- Follow document control and traceability requirements
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all safety, environmental, and handling procedures
- Use proper PPE and adhere to hazardous material protocols
- Support audits and continuous improvement initiatives
Required Qualifications
Experience
- 1–3 years of laboratory or manufacturing experience preferred
- Experience in rubber, plastics, polymers, or chemical manufacturing strongly preferred
Technical Skills
- Familiarity with rubber testing methods and lab equipment
- Ability to read and follow technical procedures and formulations
- Basic computer skills (Excel, lab data systems)
Soft Skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to follow procedures and work independently
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Time management and organizational skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
- Manual dexterity for handling materials and equipment
- Ability to work in a manufacturing/lab environment with noise, heat, and chemicals
Work Environment
- Laboratory and manufacturing floor setting
- Exposure to chemicals, rubber compounds, and machinery
- PPE required
